Austmarka marks the southern entry into Finnskogen, the well known forest area along the border between Norway and Sweden. Finnish immigrants first settled this area in the 17th century. It is known for its hilly forests and numerous lakes and rivers. Those wishing to enjoy nature at its best will find it an ideal place for a family outing, camping, fishing, hiking, biking, swimming and boating. The area has a rich wildlife, and animals like beaver, deer, elk, or even a wolf or bear have been sighted.

Comfortable camping sites and cottages are available several places throughout the Finnskogen area. Dragonmoen, by the northern shore of Lake Møkeren, offers a modern camp with all conveniences. Solhaug Kano og Fritid provides a variety of rental cottages. In addition they arrange canoe trips on the scenic waterways that run through this district. Austmarks’s local grocery store provides maps and brochures, which will help you to get the most out of your visit.

SIGHTS OF INTEREST: “Dronningens utsikt” (Queen’s Outlook), a magnificent viewpoint; Sikåa, with the ruins of an old industrial community deep in the Varaldskogen Forest; and a collection of old farmhouses located in the centre of Austmarka, giving young and old the opportunity to see the way of living in the early 1800’s.
